“The unbearable monotony of stereotypes”

Damir Nikšić is a Stockholm-based artist from Sarajevo (°1960).
His videos, installations, and performance work address
Orientalism in culture and cross-cultural psychology.

PS – a question: does the playful repetition of stereotypes reinforce or undermine them? What happens, for instance, when males are playing schoolboys from the different parts of ex-Yugoslavia in the popular Serbian sitcom Kursadžije?

So, asking more generally: which role do ‘arty’ cultural media play in the (de-)stablization of these projected imageries?

This is particularly prominent when dealing e.g. with Emir Kusturica´s in/famous movie Underground…

PPS. Art work by Šejla Kamerić, 2003
(playing on stereotypes and quoting a racist slogan that was found in the compound of the Dutch UN soldiers in Srebrenica, 1995)

And a VIDEO by Marina Abramović: Balkan Erotic Epic (Drawing scenes)
